Best book about bookbinding 2013: "My soul has no friends" by Paul C. Delrue

Na een het magere jaar 2012 (suggesties van in 2012 uitgegeven boeken over boekbinden zijn nog steeds welkom) zijn er weer heel wat interessante boeken verschenen in de loop van 2013. Een boek dat, wat mij betreft, met kop en schouders boven anderen uitsteekt is: "My soul has no friends" door de bekende boekbinder Paul C. Delrue.
Het boek geeft een beeld van de mens achter de boekbinder. Soms wordt dit genre beoefend op ongepaste wijze. Maar niet zo bij Paul C. Delrue. Het boek hoort thuis in het rijtje van de "Dagboeken" van Cobden-Sanderson en Bernard Middleton met "Recollections".
"My soul has no friends"  bestaat inhoudelijk uit 2 delen. Het eerste deel behandeld  zijn jeugdjaren. Het tweede deel behandeld verschillende boekbanden en heeft ook oog voor de door hem ontwikkelde "lucanose" techniek. Deze 2 delen zijn nauw met elkaar verbonden. Na het lezen van het boek begrijpt men veel beter de boekbanden en ontwerpen van deze boeiende binder. Geen handleiding dus over het boekbinden maar bij wijze van spreken over een boekbinder.  De onnavolgbare stijl  (een mix van humor en milde ironie) van de schrijver maakt het geheel vlot leesbaar. Het enigste minpuntje is de lay-out en  papierkeuze wat ongelukkig is uitgevoerd.

After a lean year in 2012 ( suggestions for, in 2012, published books about bookbinding are still welcome ) again there areappeared  a lot of interesting books in  2013. A book that, for me, is far the best is: " My soul has no friends " by the famous bookbinder Paul C. Delrue.
The book gives a picture of the person behind the bookbinder. Sometimes this genre is practiced inappropriately . But not so with Paul C. Delrue . The book belongs in the ranks of the " Journals " of Cobden-Sanderson and Bernard Middleton "Recollections " .
" My soul has no friends "  consists 2 parts. The first part dealt with his childhood. The second part dealt with different bindings and also has an eye for self-developed " lucanose" technique. These two parts are closely linked. After reading the book, one understands better the bindings and designs of these fascinating binder. So no manual on bookbinding but a "manual" of a bookbinder. The inimitable style ( a mix of humor and gentle irony ) of the the writer makes it all easy to read. The only minus of this book is that the layout and paper choice is rather unfortunate.
